Churches and communities of faith look to their youth for hope of a bright future to come. New generations offer a fresh perspective of our values and traditions, and are a driving force towards progress. The philosophies of “giving back” and “being the change” have come to define the motivations of today’s younger generation. Your church can help fuel this spirit by hosting church youth fundraisers.

Church youth fundraisers teach our youth important skills in community and relationship building. Successful fundraising events are not only fun but provide them with a sense of purpose, in addition to strengthening their faith. Another benefit of church youth fundraising programs is that children learn to become service leaders while helping their church meet its financial needs.

Today’s youth spend much of their time online and using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter. So providing an online presence for youth groups to manage and promote their fundraising events will not only help to engage youth, but likely result in greater financial success for your church youth fundraisers.

Here are some creative fundraising ideas for your church youth fundraisers:
Community Serve-a-thons: There’s no better way for youths to look outside of themselves to the needs of the community than by participating in service to populations in need. Through a serve-a-thon youth groups raise money by soliciting donations for their community service efforts
• Church Talent Show: Charge an entry fee and award prizes to winners. Greater fundraising success is eminent with the addition of an online raffle or silent auction as part of the event.
• Golf tournaments and golf-a-thons allow youth to participate or caddy your tournaments. See this example from Youth For Christ.
• Online auctions are one of the easiest fundraisers to organize and can be used to support community of faith and school initiatives. See this auction by Brainerd Baptist School.
• Another type of youth initiative involves applying compassion to action in the international community. Mission trip fundraising is often a part of the initiation process in confirming their commitment to a spiritual community

Church Fundraising Ideas
Community Based Fundraising

While Church Fundraising has been around for years, it is taking on a new personality in light of technological advances in communication. Today’s churches must motivate their busy congregations to financially support capital and special program needs, as well as provide care for the disadvantaged members of their community. This is a lot to take on, especially given that families are so busy with work and school activities. So as the internet and social media create change within our daily lives at an ever increasing rate, churches are going online to facilitate community building and unique forms of fundraising.

The benefits of online church fundraising may include:
• Strengthening of faith for your active fundraising congregation members
• Raising funds for development of church resources and educational programs
• Bringing people and talents together in new and fun ways outside of typical worship
• Providing great opportunities to socialize and get to know members of the congregation better

Many groups make up a church body and these groups offer a great opportunity for community building through fundraising efforts. Church groups include men’s and women’s groups, social interest groups, and local and international mission initiatives. All of these groups can utilize online fundraising to foster their activities.

Here are some examples of faith-based groups conducting successful church fundraising efforts:

Video fundraising appeals are a unique way for nonprofit organizations to communicate their needs effectively and reach a wide, online audience.  Like television ads for political campaigns, the public is moved by performances of human beings asking for help as opposed to just reading an appeal. The key elements in video fundraising involve the content, length, style and sound.

Content  Video Fundraising Elements and Styles

The story of your organization can be told in a number of ways.  If your organization is planning a walk-a-thon, a select group of your participants can state why they are walking and share their individual passion for your cause.  This site is a great example of this strategy used in an online fundraising appeal: http://muirsmarch.dojiggy.com.

Another strategy is to feature your lead staff members in telling stories of the history of their work, sharing feelings and stating their commitment to your organization.  Or, recipients of the funds you have raised could state the ways your organization has changed their lives.  Video fundraising styles for such appeals vary and can include footage of the places you work,  interviews or both.  Here is a nice example of video fundraising using this style:  http://walktoafrica.dojiggy.com.

Video fundraising appeals rarely ask for money, rather they place the unique strengths that make your work successful and deserving of support in the forefront of your message.

Keeping your video between approximately 3 and 7 minutes in length is a good idea so as to maintain the attention of your audience.

Music videofundraising 300x200 Video Fundraising Elements and StylesSound

Some online fundraising videos chose to have upbeat music playing which communicates action.   Other appeals use soft, sentimental music which pulls at the tender strings of our hearts.  Both are equally as effective in motivating donors to give to your cause.  The rhythm of the music you select should carry the tempo of your story.  Words, pictures and music can effectively join together in concert to create a dynamic video fundraising appeal.

Online video fundraising appeals are a powerful tool in that they speak, person-to-person, to millions of Internet users worldwide.  For more information regarding online fundraising software and a host of strategies and resources visit DoJiggy.

Creative and effective fundraising walk ideas can serve as year round fundraising and relationship building opportunities for your organization. Important bonds can be created with your community during an entertaining walk-a-thon, and the celebration, success and public education offered by your fundraising walk will long be in the minds and hearts of your donors. Utilizing unique fundraising walk ideas also sets your walk-a-thon apart from the many others that are likely happening within your community.

Let’s discuss some specific fundraising walk ideas here:

DOG WALKS: Opting to put a furry spin on your annual walk-a-thon by expanding its participant audience to our favorite four-legged friends is a creative fundraising walk idea successfully used by many organizations. Planning a dog walk-a-thon follows many of the same familiar steps of a regular walk-a-thon, but specific needs exist for accommodating both your human and canine friends.  The following dog walk supplement, How to Plan a Successful Dog Walk-a-thon, will assist you with the logistics, safety issues, and event specifics for managing a fun and successful dog walk-a-thon. Dogs walks are an especially nice fundraising walk idea for humane associations, shelters, and organizations with an animal focus.

2. HOLIDAY THEMED WALKS: Another great fundraising walk idea as Easter approaches is hosting an Easter egg hunt. This can be iStock Easter 200x300 Fundraising Walk Ideas to Make Your Walk a thon Uniquedone with real, decorated eggs or plastic eggs with numbers corresponding to prizes or candy.   When the hunt is over, prizes may be given out for various achievements, such as the largest number of eggs collected, and a grand prize for finding the Easter basket or special egg.  Awarding a prize for the best rabbit costume, and having a photographer on board for this colorful fundraising event would certainly add to the fun.  This is a great idea for kids and school fundraising, but adults like to play too.

3. GREEN WALKS: More  fundraising walk ideas involve a green themed event.  Including stations along the way that educate folks on green technology, ecology and conservation can be fun and educational.  Stations such as a bat cave during Halloween can scare people, and educate them about the importance and decline of our bat populations, or a rain forest filled with plants, birds and tigers. Inviting green technology companies to set up camp along your walking path can serve to educate the public on conservation efforts, and offer a great benefit and incentive for them to sponsor your event.

Social media encompasses a myriad of online technology tools. The first names that come to mind are usually social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, however, email, blogs, and podcasts are all considered to be social media tools. There are some important aspects for nonprofit organizations to recognize about these tools, principally, that they are interactive. In addition, the basis of social media is that it is a user-generated engine that instigates a communication system essential to the fundraising possibilities of an organization. It is also the preferred method of communication for an emerging generation of donors and volunteers, and embracing it allows nonprofit organizations to tap into that source when managing their fundraising campaigns.

The Power of Social Media in Online Fundraising Campaigns

Social Media Toolbox for Fundraising Strategies

It is not enough to simply create a Facebook page, or “tweet” information from time to time. The interactive nature of social media requires that nonprofit organizations enter into an honest and stimulating conversation with their supporters during their fundraising campaigns. This relationship must be maintained with the publication of results and updates on current activities. If managed well an organization can greatly increase its fundraising capacity in addition to extending its member base.

Social media aids fundraising efforts with its autonomy for individuals in promoting the causes they believe in. This method is often called “distributed fundraising” and DoJiggy has capitalized on this strength with its Pledge edition software service. Using DoJiggy’s online fundraising software, participants invent their own personal fundraising pages where they receive donations for their participation in a cause-oriented event. They can easily email friends and family and link to their Facebook and Twitter accounts to solicit support. The independence of the individual in managing their fundraising effort fosters empowerment and takes the burden of centralized responsibility from the event administrators. This type of distributed fundraising has been most common in events like walk-a-thons or bike-a-thons.

Need a new fundraising idea? Most non-profit organizations are always looking for fresh ideas to keep their online fundraising fun and their organization’s constituents engaged.

While fundraising merchandise sales are hardly new, they have just been revolutionized! Remember when you had to purchase a large quantity of a product up front and then resell it to make a profit. Unsold items and missing sales envelopes meant headache and loss of revenue for your organization. Not to mention lugging around all of those boxes of chocolates.

The Exeter Swim-a-thon : Interview with Coach Greig Cronauer

“91 families raised $38,000 in less than 2 months.”

ExeterSwim 1 1024x605 Exeter Swim A Thon Triples Funds Raised ~ Interview with Coach Greig Cronauer

Q: Tell us about your team & the need for a fundraising event:

Exeter Swim Team is a swim team with 130 members ranging in age from 7 to 18.  The team hires two full-time coaches and three part-time coaches in addition to paying for pool time.  (So) There is a need for fundraising each year to keep dues at a reasonable level.  In the past our team had done raffles, car washes and “tagging” which is standing in front of stores in team apparel with a donation cup.

Q: Why did you choose to have a Swim-a-thon Pledge Event?

I had organized three different Swim-A-Thons with other teams and I like this pledge-per-length system because it is not just “asking for money” or “buying a chance” like a raffle.  The swimmers are earning money to support their team by swimming for it.  Swimming is hard work, and not that walking or golfing isn’t, but most sponsors are impressed that the youngster has a goal to complete “X” number of lengths within 2 hours.  Swimming laps is tough for most people and this attracts more sponsors… or a higher amount per length.

Our team has 9 different age/ability groups and coaches gave each swimmer an appropriate goal of either 50, 100, 150 or 200 lengths to complete in the allotted 2 hours.  We give each swimmer suggestions on how to approach friends and neighbors in person for pledges.   The suggested line is “I am asking for you (or your business) to sponsor me for each length I swim to raise money for my team and the Olympic Swim Team.  I will work very hard to support the sport I love.”  This is how we had done things in the past, and we had been very successful with it, but it was all done by hand and door-to-door.

Q: You chose to use Online Fundraising Software this year. Why DoJiggy?

I did a lot of research prior to our fundraiser and DoJiggy was the only software company who didn’t charge an added fee for pledges or donations.  We paid one flat fee and that was it.  We worked with Dharma for our payment processor and they were also wonderful. They reduced the setup fee, and their credit card fees were the norm for what most retail businesses charge. (averaging 2%)

Q: How did DoJiggy Pledge software work for you?

The DoJiggy website allowed us to do this online and to more than triple our income from previous Swim-A-Thons while making it much easier for swimmers and their parents.  The site is easy to set up and even easier for potential sponsors to view.  We used one of their pre-formed fundraising templates and just added our text and photos.

Swimmers can easily set up their own page, with an individual message and photo, to solicit pledges.  This gives a “personal and individual touch” without the need to go door-to-door.  Your potential sponsors are now all your friends and family from across the country.  With DoJiggy you can send your personal page through e-mail, Facebook or Twitter and sponsors can click a button to immediately submit a pledge, online, with their credit or debit card.   This eliminates most of the door-to-door solicitation of pledges and the need to go back and collect the checks or cash when the event is over.

Picture 96 Exeter Swim A Thon Triples Funds Raised ~ Interview with Coach Greig Cronauer

What most impressed us with DoJiggy was its clarity and simplicity.  The main page on the fundraising website displayed a motivating thermometer showing our goal and the amount we had raised to date though donations or pledges.  (Many sponsors just donated a flat amount instead of doing a per-length pledge.)  Each swimmer’s page also had their own little thermometer with their individual goal so a sponsor could instantly see both thermometers rise once the pledge was made.

Q: What was your fundraising goal?  How successful were you in meeting this?

Our fundraising goal was originally $25,000 but that was raised to $30,000 after we saw the total of the swimmers’ fundraising goals and how successfully the event was running.  The coach-set goals for each swimmer were challenging, but doable.  Any lengths achieved above and beyond were not charged to the sponsor, although some were so impressed that they donated a second, fixed amount when they saw what their sponsored swimmer had achieved.  We ended up with over $38,000.

Amazingly, every dollar raised was pledged through the Dojiggy site and over $35,000 was collected via the online payment processor!  Almost no door-to-door collection by parents or swimmers.  The money went straight into the team’s bank account.

Q: How did you you motivate your team?

I think motivating “deep” was crucial to our success – finding ways to get every team member involved as opposed to letting the top 20% of the swimmers raise 80% of the money.  We offered prizes to the “Top 10″individuals, and spent $1200 in prizes.  These included IPods and digital cameras for the older swimmers and Lego sets, Barbie dollhouses and Laser Tag for the younger set.  (They could also choose the equivalent amount in cash if they wanted.)  This was key to motivating all the different ages that would be participating.

Exeter Pie 21 300x169 Exeter Swim A Thon Triples Funds Raised ~ Interview with Coach Greig Cronauer In addition, we split into three competing inter-squad teams, and mixed the ages and strongest swimmers amongst them.  The top team got to “pie” the coaches, and this motivated every swimmer on the team…. some even more than the prizes!  Even if you weren’t close to the top 10, you could get a chance to shove a pie in a coach’s face if you helped your team win. We constantly reinforced the team competition, and offered short-term rewards such as letting the team in the lead do something fun at the end of practice.

The Exeter Swim Team was extremely pleased with the results.

Triple the income with less than 25% of the effort is the way to go!

Is your nonprofit or community organization interested in providing low-cost travel incentives which can be used as participant or donor incentives to enhance your fundraising efforts?  Or maybe you are looking for special gifts to give to volunteers who’ve dedicated their time and energy to make your fundraising event go off without a hitch.   Whatever the reason…travel incentives provide organizations with a unique way to motivate, reward and thank constituents.

airplaine free1 Travel Incentives for Your Fundraiser

How does it work?

Travel incentives are typically purchased “in bulk” in advance of your fundraiser.  The actual type of travel incentive may range from a 3-night hotel stay; to a cruise getaway; to a week-long luxury vacation (with prices starting at only $15 per voucher).  They can then be used for motivating and rewarding participants and donors to go the extra mile in support of your cause, as well as thanking volunteers, sponsors, and team captains.

Here are a few specific examples:

  • If you are hosting a walk-a-thon event where various teams register under a specific group or captain, this could be a great way to thank team captains for leading and motivating their teams to accomplish established goals.  Or perhaps travel incentives could be used as a prize for the top performing participants–those who were able to raise the most pledge donations. Potential prizes can be highlighted on your fundraising website in an effort to motivate participants and their donors to raise more funds.
  • Another possibility for travel incentives is to offer these as “thank you” gifts for donors who contribute a specified amount.  Say anyone who donates $250+ receives a travel voucher as a “gift” to thank them for their generous contribution.  This can be a great way to push the needle a bit and increase donation amounts from individual donors.
  • Raffle prizes are another great use for travel incentives.  These can be used at a gala fundraiser or any fundraising event.  Typically raffle tickets will be sold at the beginning of the night when registrants check in.  Prizes are listed on the event program or displayed and attendees have the choice to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win fabulous prizes. Fundraising raffles can be an exciting part of your fundraising event and a great way to raise additional dollars!
  • If you have brought on sponsors to provide financial assistance and help promote your fundraising event throughout the community, travel incentives can be a great way to thank them for their support.  Included in sponsor benefit packages, you can outline the type of travel vouchers that will be included with their level of sponsorship.  Companies at the top-tier level may receive numerous travel incentives, which they can use for employee rewards and prizes.

Summary
Regardless of how you choose to distribute the travel incentives (gifts, thank you’s, prizes, etc.) the goal is for these to add value to your fundraising event and hopefully help you generate more funds for your cause.  The cost of purchasing the travel vouchers will likely be minimal compared to the money sponsoring companies are investing in your fundraiser or monies received from raffle ticket sales…yet, the value of the prizes is far greater than what you spend (making the prizes that much more appreciated!)

Funding for public schools has historically been a debated subject, and in the current economic atmosphere, improvements in the financial situation of public schools seem unlikely. As many as 40 states cope with budget shortfalls, which threaten America’s 14,000 school districts. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 allocated an $814 billion stimulus package for public K-12 schools, leaving the responsibility for how to distribute funds in the hands of each state.  In most cases, funding was used to save the jobs of teachers and other school employees. However, funds are drying up, and most state budgets have not created a revenue stream to replace this emergency bail out. The result is the further deterioration of an already crippled system in which services and jobs are at stake and thus, the quality of education as a whole. (Article references below)

Overcoming the Challenges

One community witnessed this debacle and decided to take matters into their own hands rather than wait for government funding to save the day. Fairburn Avenue Elementary School is located in a culturally and economically diverse community in Los Angeles. They recently faced losing their library and gym teacher. The students, parents, and teachers banded together for a successful walk-a-thon fundraiser and were able to avoid the loss!

Here’s their story…

Kelly Emma at the Walk for Education 2011 200x300 Fairburn Elementary: A Collaborative Community Effort to Overcome Financial Challenges

Kelly & Emma at the Walk for Education 2011

Fairburn Elementary has not only a P.T.A. organization, but a specific committee for fundraising as well. Kelly Aluise is one of the coordinators of the group and she, along with Mei Lani Poindexter and Carrie Haber, organized the second annual walk-a-thon in partnership with DoJiggy.
“Our active supporters tend to be a small community of the same parents. Using a fundraising website this year really helped generate a greater pool of support,” she states. “The thing that REALLY helped was creating the increased potential for soliciting donors through an online presence. The kids were able to reach out to friends and family from all over the world! It really created a lot of excitement and motivation.”

In addition to online fundraising, some Fairburn students even got creative by manifesting small enterprise ideas to bolster their fundraising activity. For instance, creating baked goods or craft items to sell with the proceeds going to their personal pledge page as a donation. Although there were many incentives for individual and class efforts in fundraising, the committee decided to concentrate on the quantity of donations raised by each student rather than a mere dollar amount.

Another successful tactic that Fairburn implemented was to show 4th and 5th graders how to manage their personal fundraising page as part of a computer lab. Although the school cannot allow the students to create their fundraising page in class for liability reasons, the instructive support was integral in motivating the students to take responsibility for their own fundraising efforts. Communication between the fundraising committee and the parents was an important benefit, fostered by the easy email management system embedded in the walk-a-thon software system.  Often schools face security concerns regarding students putting their names and photos on a website. Through the open communication channels, the committee addressed this by suggesting using initials rather than full last names, and photos of a pet or favorite character of the child rather than a personal photo. The response was very positive.

Fairburn also had community support from small and corporate local businesses. Donations from places like Whole Foods, as well as volunteer support from parents and teachers meant that the event had no cost. Through these tactics and DoJiggy online fundraising software, Fairburn raised over $20,000, increased participation significantly, and saved their library and sports program!

Summary

Fairburn Elementary has proven by example that economic crisis and restricted funding for public schools does not mean families have to accept sub-standard educational environments for their children. In addition to raising more than $20,000 from the annual walk-a-thon, Fairburn has a pledge drive that this year generated over $230,000 and boasted 98% participation from the families. They also have an online auction that raised $70,000 as well as student events such as the Spring Fling and Valentine’s Day Dance.
