After working for 25 years as a marketing and merchandising executive in the consumer electronics business, Bob Wikes put his passion and talent together and started Fore Green Golf, an Eco-friendly Golf Tournament Company in Phoenix, Arizona. An entrepreneur at heart, Bob saw a niche and went for it. To begin with, as an impromptu tournament planner himself during his years as an executive, Bob experienced firsthand the difficult challenge of executing a successful golf tournament while simultaneously attending to the demands of the job. Secondly, when he began consulting for Dixon Golf which puts out the world’s first earth-friendly golf ball, Bob realized that earth friendly products make for a great tournament concept. One could essentially put together an Eco Golf Tournament every step of the way: from utilizing online registration to save paper to providing participants with goodie bags filled with earth friendly products. Tournaments could have a lighter footprint from start to finish. By combining the need for tournament management with an earth friendly focus, Bob has discovered a market that’s sure to grow.
What’s most remarkable about Fore Green Golf is that it’s brand new! Once Bob put his marketing expertise to work, the concept grew legs and hit the ground running. When Bob researched “green golf” and found that nobody is pursuing his idea, he bought his domain name and launched a website. Over the past 90 days, he’s networked and built a community around Fore Green Golf. Bob shares that everyone has been very positive. Friends and strangers alike have stepped forward offering help and feedback. He believes that enthusiasm is due in part to the nature of the green community, “They’re a very cool, tightly knit group that shares ideas. Everyone wants to help each other for the same cause which is improve the environment.”
Who is Fore Green Golf’s clientele? Anyone who wants to put on a golf tournament, preferably a green one. Most people who put on golf tournaments are sponsoring for charity. Many of them want to avoid tons of waste and create an environmentally conscious event. A lot of them are attempting to do manage a tournament while also maintaining their job responsibilities. Bob steps in to help with all aspects of the golf tournament beginning early on in the planning stages to tournament day coordinator. Fore Green Golf provides hands-on support and intelligent partnership to ensure a successful, fun, and green tournament. Most recently, Bob partnered with Golfregistrations in order to provide clients with an effective and functional online registration and tournament management website. According to Bob, the software would cost thousands of dollars and months to develop. With Golfregistrations, he was able to create a demo site within minutes to promote his business. The golf tournament software also makes it easier on organizations to register participants and create reports. Bob affirms that Golfregistrations is very easy to use and the partnership program provides extra incentive. As a consultant, he can set up websites for his organizations to get them started and then they can take over from there.
In five years, Bob envisions Fore Green Golf a thriving business with event managers handling numerous tournaments. By then, he hopes to have expanded outside of Phoenix, capturing the West Coast. Ultimately, Bob anticipates working the tournament circuit based on national weather patterns, running an annual tournament of events wherever the sun shines.
