Today is summer solstice…the first day of summer, and the longest day of the year. To kick off summer, we pulled together some quick summer fundraising safety tips. People love spending time outside during summer, hence the perfect time for organizing a fundraiser such as a fundraising picnic, outdoor festival, or charity golf tournament. Summer is also a time for “getting in shape” – providing an opportunity to promote a walk-a-thon, swim-a-thon or bike-a-thon event. But, along with summer comes rising temperatures and additional health precautions to think about, in order keep your participants and volunteers safe as they enjoy raising funds at your summer fundraising event.
Quick Safety Tips for Summer Fundraising
- Stay hydrated: Be sure to have plenty of water on hand for you and your group (especially if doing something that requires exercise such as a walk-a-thon, beach volleyball tournament, etc.) If your event is spread out over a course, be sure to provide stations where participants can re-hydrate.
- Protection from the Sun: Provide sunscreen for participants and volunteers to avoid sunburn. Enouraging people to wear hats and light colored clothing can also help people feel cooler avoiding sun strokes or fatigue. Be sure to provide shaded areas for people to get out of the sun a bit and rest.
- First Aid & Security: Be sure to have someone with medical experience on-site in case of an accident or over-exhaustion (especially if your fundraiser has physical activity). Often local paramedics will donate their time in support of a charitable cause. Similarly if large amounts of cash are collected at your fundraising event (through sales or donations) you may want to hire a security company to minimize risk of theft.
- Take Breaks & Provide Snacks: Be sure to include breaks for volunteers, participants, staff, sponsors, etc. In addition to keeping plenty of water on-hand, provide snacks so people can keep their energy going throughout the day. Fruits, veggies and jell-o are all easy, healthy treats that contain plenty of water.
Good luck with your fundraising efforts and enjoy all that summer has to offer.
