Golf Tournament for Developmental Disabilities

A charity golf tournament hosted by La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos just outside of San Francisco in the Santa Cruz Mountain foothills sets the stage for fundraising. The golf tournament was planned around enjoying the club and networking for Hope Services who is the nonprofit beneficiary. Enjoying a beautiful morning in the Bay Area with a leisurely two hour registration followed by a 12:30 lunch before the golf tournament brings golfers relaxed and satiated to the game of golf.

The golf tournament begins on the ideal course with a shotgun start. Relaxing and celebrating with cocktails, dinner, an auction and ceremony afterwards wraps up a full day and evening. Golf events as grand as this seem effortless and focus on pleasure and building relationships. The planning committee behind the scenes shares some tips and golf tournament ideas as to how they made it run seamlessly.

Hope Services partnered with La Rinconada Country Club for this September golf tournament fundraiser. They are the leading provider of services to individuals with developmental disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area helping nearly 4,000 individuals and their families annually. “We provide a broad spectrum of services to infants through seniors such as children’s services, day programs, staffing, mental health services, community living services, and senior services.

Hope Services’ mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities, as measured by eight indicators:

  • personal development
  • self-determination
  • interpersonal relations
  • social inclusion
  • rights
  • emotional well-being,
  • physical well-being, and
  • material well-being”

Golf Tournament Planning and Sponsors

The planning committee focused on the sponsor recruitment process which is very important for golf events, and began by reaching out to their own network. They looked to their board members and top donors and supporters for donations first. They then looked to their community to find potential local and regional sponsors to help both with their costs and cause.

They designated a team to contact local businesses to ask for support of retail stores, restaurants and professional service providers. They found support throughout their state by calling potential supporters in business. They sought partnerships and support from other nonprofit organizations. They communicated in writing through email, letters, social medial and their website explaining the golf tournament’s purpose and stating where the proceeds will go. The most successful charity golf events are the ones that make this process a primary effort.

The committee determined what type of sponsorship packages to sell on their charity golf website. Golf websites hold the power to not only sell sponsor packages, but to highlight those who have purchased them. Recognition is key in helping sponsors in return for their donation and commitment to your cause. The Hope Services golf tournament website proudly showcases their sponsors.

Cocktails, Auction, Program and Dinner

Separate tickets are sold on the golf website for the after events. Everyone is invited whether or not they golf to join in after the golf tournament for cocktails, an action, program and dinner. The food will be discussed in the next days to come, creating an opportunity to make the charity golf tournament memorable. Choose a local chef who will bring their staff in donation to your cause. Golf events usually attract a large number of people from your community, and this is a fantastic time to entertain and impress.

For those unable to attend the golf tournament itself, the banquet provides another opportunity to raise additional dollars. And the golfers have an opportunity to wind down from the long day of playing golf and will be hungry, thirsty and happy. They will enjoy the time to share the experiences of the day with friends and co-workers, while finding out results of contests.

This is also a great time to make any announcements about what your organization’s goals are and help in spreading awareness for your cause. Be sure to thank golfers, volunteers and sponsors and highlight specific community members who made a difference. Golf websites are another showcase to feature individuals and teams who contributed – the homepage is the best spot.
